BYO mating options

Angus breeders will have the chance to mate their sire of choice with one of Barnett Angus’ elite donor cows under an innovative new program.

Barnett Angus run by Mark Barnett at Westbury, 25 minutes west of Launceston, were established on the success of purchasing three donor cows from Strathewen. All three have exceeded expectations, prompting the creation of a donor program and a new BYO mating option.

Two of the original donor cows, Strathewen Regent Mittagong J23 and Strathewen Regent Wilpena J53, have produced more than 50 progeny, many of which are found at Barnett Angus.

Strathewen Regent Mittagong J23 has exceptional phenotype and her genomic data continues to improve with each progeny group.

“I got a lot of embryos from her and sold her to a colleague who has since on-sold her,” Mr Barnett said. “One of her daughters sold for $17,500 and I sold a half interest in five daughters for $50,000.”

“In my view, in time she will be recognised as one of the breed’s leading cows. She has had four owners and each have enhanced their respective breeding programs because of her genetics.”

In addition to the original three donor cows from Strathewen, Barnett Angus has recently acquired donor additions from Ayrvale.

The Barnett Angus herd are high indexing females selected for high fertility, exceptional growth, and outstanding carcass values. Among the herd are a number of J23 & J53 grand-daughters which make up a number of our currently Donor cows available for BYO sires.
