Interview with Harvey Weyman-Jones and Michael Glasser

In this interview, I had the pleasure of engaging with Harvey Weyman-Jones of GDL and Michael Glasser of Ray White GTSM and getting their views on the BarnettAngus December 2nd offering on Elite Livestock.

Harvey visited the herd and viewed the recipient program about a month ago along with Peter Daniel (MD of GDL) and one of their long-time commercial clients – Mick Gibson.

Michael was the auctioneer who sold us a couple of our donor cows as well as officiating at the Texas Angus sale with Harvey when Texas Iceman – one of our feature mating sires – was sold for an Australian record price.

We discussed the catalogue offering including:

  • 40 pregnant recipients that are carrying sexed embryos,

  • 40 elite embryos,

  • A young stud sire option – Barnett Rollo R5, and

  • Two BarnettAngus semen sires.

We have always been believers of the importance of maternal strength in any pedigree regardless of if we are looking at Sires or Dams. By knowing their individual capacity and how they contribute to de-risking a pedigree is a great advantage to any breeding program.

The importance of females is often understated and undervalued and reminds us of the saying ‘behind every great man is a great woman’. Actually, it is more like a number of great women!

We are big believers in accurate data and using that data to inform our breeding program and mating decisions. It's beyond us why anyone would not be interested in using genetics that are outside the top 10% of the breed. Genetics has such a big part to play in herd profitability and longevity.

As the market winds of change are blowing towards improved returns for animals with measurable carcase values, high indexing breeders are becoming a valuable commodity. Ensuring these breeders are core to your breeding program underpins an exciting future.

We hope you enjoy the conversation with Harvey and Michael and please visit our website for further information and updates.

Thank you.
Mark Barnett
